Dearest friends of queer experimental film and everyone, who want to be: October's BaliQueer issue is entirely dedicated to you! After we attended ORLANDO by Paul B. at the last queer film festival. Preciado have watched, We are now looking forward to FREAK ORLANDO by Ulrike Ottinger. As a basis for the content, there is a short input about Ulrike Ottinger's life and work - and we can discuss it later, what we experienced!

FREAK ORLANDO
a film by Ulrike Ottinger
With Magdalena Moctezuma and Delphine Seyrig
126 minutes, Germany, 1981, German without subtitles

We accompany the main character and his gang of outsiders on an adventurous journey across five centuries. Between the romances of bearded women and chases by angry leather men, Orlando alias Orlanda Zyklopa alias Orlando Carpricho alias Mr or Mrs Orlando finds himself (played by Magdalena Montezuma) with the ever-changing but ever-oppressive norms of gender, Body and sexuality confronted.
Loosely inspired by Virigina Woolf's novel “Orlando – “A political biography” is what the experimental film asks, who has historically been turned into freaks and monsters by society and in what way. Whether he finds an answer to it, that's debatable.
