Attacks on academic freedom in Germany have been increasing for years. According to a recent survey 45 Percent of scientists surveyed in Germany personally experience hostility to science. This is particularly worrying, that these now also come from the state. In summer 2024 left the educational- and Ministry of Science (BMBF) check, whether critical scientist:internal funding could be withdrawn, if they publicly represent unpleasant political positions. The politicization of funding allocation as well as punitive- and disciplinary sanctions against critical scientists:inside are illiberal methods, undermine academic freedom. These have serious consequences for research and teaching. The restrictions on university autonomy caused by political pressure on universities also pose a threat to the freedom of science and teaching. These procedures are otherwise familiar from autocratic contexts. The lecture presents state interventions in academic freedom in the recent history of the Federal Republic and discusses strategies against illiberal interventions. Anil Shah and Kristina Dietz will moderate the event.
