1. Part of the event series: 140 Years of the Berlin Africa Conference – Imperialism yesterday and today

In front 140 Years ago, the European colonial powers met in Berlin to negotiate the division of the African continent between them. The of 1884 to 1885 The Berlin Africa Conference held here is an example of the “race for Africa” and is seen as the beginning of the peak phase of European imperialism. While just a few years before the conference began, “only” a fraction of Africa was under colonial control, became the continent at the end of the 19. Century almost entirely from France, Great Britain, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, and Germany dominated. However, imperial relations are not just a historical phenomenon, but continue to shape the global economy and politics in many different ways today.

On the occasion of this depressing anniversary, the Department of Development Policy and Postcolonial Studies at the University of Kassel, together with the guest speakers, invites you to the event series “140 Years of the Berlin Africa Conference: Imperialism yesterday and today”.. It starts with a very interesting lecture of Napo Swan Oubo-Gbati about Punitive expeditions to Togo during the period of German colonial rule. In addition, listeners have the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas with each other after the lecture. Everyone is cordially invited!
