round 17.000 Jews were deported from Hesse under the Nazi regime. Almost everyone was murdered; little more than 950 have survived. The deportations took place in full view of everyone – including in Kassel and the region. With the book by Monica Kingreen († 2017) For the first time, an overall account of the deportation and murder of Jews is available for the entire state of Hesse. The manuscript, which the author left unfinished, was edited by the historian and archivist Dr. Volker Eichler edited for printing and partially supplemented. A reading from the victims' testimonies and the survivors' memories allows the events to be traced: the violent removal of people from their homes, Escape to suicide, the train journey of thousands into the unknown, finally suffering and death in the camps and ghettos.

A cooperation event by the city of Kassel, the Jewish Community of Kassel, the Breitenau Memorial and the Commission for the History of the Jews in Hesse.
