FILM AND DISCUSSION

SOLD CITY – WHEN HOUSING BECOMES A COMMODITY

part 1: Property instead of human rights (102 Min.)

Since the financial crisis, investors and funds of all kinds began, invest primarily in residential real estate, More and more apartments are less about living than about returns. Since then, the market has decided, where people live.

The first part deals with the system of converting living space into corporate property. Banks, Funds and international investment capital are pushing into the cities. Hardly anyone seems safe from selling their apartment anymore. When you check out they are the only ones, that are disruptive, the tenants. This is how Daniel Dieckmann from Habersaathstrasse in Berlin puts it. When it comes to renting and forced evictions, the owners use their sometimes criminal methods to cover up the property.

Housing is a public service and a human right. But politicians seem to be completely abandoning their obligation to provide care. Social housing construction has been dwindling for decades in the service of private investors, despite billions in subsidies. What does it look like in other large cities such as London or Vienna, around which investor capital also orbits??
