The 8. May 1945 is and remains for us the day of liberation from fascism and war; also against the background of the war in Ukraine. We remember on 8. May to the contribution of all forces of the anti-Hitler coalition for the liberation of Germany.

Two years ago, the Auschwitz survivor and now deceased Esther Bejarano demanded:
"Of the 8. May must be a public holiday! A day, where the liberation of mankind from the Nazi regime can be celebrated. This is overdue, for seven decades. … Am 8. May would then be an opportunity, to contemplate the great hopes of mankind: About freedom, equality, Fraternity – and sisterhood.” This appeal is particularly relevant to us today.

The 8. For us, May also stands for remembering the political legacy of the survivors and the anti-fascist-democratic new beginning in our country.

Never again means war for us too, that we stand up against a further armament of our country. We are vehemently opposed to the creation of a special fund by 100 Mrd. € for armaments expenditure. We urgently need this money to invest in our future, so that we can still live safely and in community tomorrow and the foundations for this are preserved; i.e. climate protection and a socio-ecological transformation of our lives and the economy, in social work and in good education for all, in support of war refugees from Ukraine and other regions of the world, in a good healthcare system and good public services of general interest. Disarmament instead of rearmament - investment in the areas, who really protect us - that remains our message.

“Annihilation of Nazism with its roots, Creation of a new world of peace and freedom” – that was and is the obligation of the “Oath of Buchenwald” dated 19. April 1945. We remember the women and men, who – at the risk of their lives – made the liberation possible. In their spirit, we act together today against neo-fascism, racism and anti-Semitism, against war and its social roots.
