About the artists, who came to the Federal Republic of Germany with the “guest workers”..
I don't have fond memories of studying art history in Hamburg. The subtle messages, that I don't belong, still have an impact decades later. I thought, as a queer person, art history would be a place, where I could feel safe. But I was read as a “foreigner” – as one of those foreigners, that the country no longer wants, even though I already had German citizenship. Many years later I started, to be interested in the artists, those within the framework of the recruitment agreement with the migrant workers (some of them were themselves) had come to Germany. These artists found, that the “guest workers”, like my parents, are worthy of a picture, without stereotyping them as strangers. Artists, about which there is hardly anything to be found in the Central Institute for Art History or in other specialist art history libraries. This research resulted in three exhibitions: “There is no there there” in the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt (2024), “Annem işçi – Who sews the red flags?“ in the Marta Herford Museum (2024) and „Staying Abroad / Staying abroad” in the Taxispalais Innsbruck (2023). In the lecture I talk about this and the structural racism of the art world.
