Emergency of the working society – Strikes and protests by workers in the pandemic

With inputs from Peter Birke (University of Göttingen) und Artemisa Ljarja (Clean Clothes Campaign, https://cleanclothes.org/), Moderation: Nikolai Huke (University of Tübingen)

After in the first weeks of the corona pandemic, the public focus on statements made by crisis teams made almost everything else forget, Since the beginning of April, the question of the social dimensions of the lockdown has been given more attention. It appears, how quickly the corona crisis is turning into an emergency for the working society: There are massive attacks on social rights and claims, to an expanded exploitation of unpaid care work, and a tightened austerity policy is now more than just fear. Millions of workers in the south and east of the world are suspended or fired, with little or no compensation, and others are forced, to work in unsafe factories, because this is the only way, To avoid misery.

The input from Peter Birke (University of Göttingen) first ask about it, which industrial disputes can currently be observed. Secondly, it is developed briefly and in the manner of a thesis, what can be derived from these observations in terms of concept and political potential of industrial action.
Artemisa Ljarja (Clean Clothes Campaign) deals with the consequences of the pandemic for employees in the international supply chains for clothing and shoes. Using examples from different countries East- and Southeast Europe is shown, how the supply chain model leaves tens of millions of workers unprotected against the economic devastation of the pandemic.
