The corona crisis unfolds in a global political economy, the authoritarian in recent years by the rise of populist forces and was marked in many countries. How do these forces now behave, since the pandemic breaks the social and political normality? We are discussing on the basis of recent developments in Italy and Austria.

The Lega under Salvini already used the beginning of the outbreak of the corona crisis to exclusion of Chinese women in Italy. First consequences were massive losses for the local Chinese economy and escalating cases of discrimination against Italian-Chinese communities. It was the motto: Italian first! – Before Italians! What happens next, since the enemy does not come from the outside and the Lombardy has become the new Hubei?

In Austria, the corona crisis hits one FPÖ, which after-Ibiza affair, the spin-off of long-time leader Heinz-Christian Strache is and persistent internal conflicts, even in crisis mode. She is now trying, to take advantage of the exceptional situation, to consolidate and to stage a particularly consistent crisis manager. At the same time Sebastian tries Short, Chancellor and Chairman of the ÖVP, extend its leadership position into a comprehensive claim to hegemony. What contradictions and new lines of conflict arising from these developments for the rights in the two countries?

These topics we discuss with Daniela Caterina (Huazhong University of Science and Technology Wuhan) and Benjamin Opratko (University of Vienna). Moderation: Norma Tiedemann (University of Kassel)
