As part of the SDG+ Lab at the University of Kassel, 27. November one 19 A panel discussion on the future of the road ring around Kassel's city center will take place. The reason is a holistic concept for its transformation, which was developed by several departments and students in the ASL department over two years. Representatives of the city council factions as well as Gerhard Greiner are invited, President of the Architects- and Chamber of City Planners in Hesse. The evening will be moderated by Prof. Stefan Rettich. Large-format visualizations have been showing at Lutherplatz since last week, at St. Martin's Church, at the Brethren Church, at Ständeplatz and at Holländischer Platz, how the situations could actually change.
The car-friendly expansion of cities, the one in Germany 80 years ago on the rubble of the Second World War, is facing a transformation in many places: Hamburg is developing concepts for its main routes, Hanover is moving forward with the renovation of the city ring and Stuttgart is moving forward with the redesign of the B14, south-east of the city center as a new urban space - spaces with more greenery are planned everywhere, for living and for apartments, Work or culture on newly acquired land. The automobile, for which the rooms were developed, shouldn't disappear - but many traffic and places in Kassel can be organized differently and designed with more trees and green spaces, that people are once again more at the center of the urban environment and at the same time increasing heat stress can be countered. And here too, many new apartments and jobs could be created in a central location.
The SDG+ Lab is a regional “think & Do Tank” from the University of Kassel, which is from 2023 to 2027 over four thematic years is dedicated to the major sustainability issues of our time. It connects science, Economy and society, to make Kassel and northern Hesse more sustainable. The project is funded by the federal-state initiative “Innovative University”.
