In a Japanese mountain village, its residents live happily and contentedly, if it weren't for a mysterious lake. This “Demon Pond” is said to be inhabited by demons and whoever looks into its depths, is cursed by them. When the young Shokichi falls in love with one of the villagers, begins a series of eerie events.
Based on a famous Kabuki play, Shinoda directs the film with opulent production design, shimmering costumes and bright make-up create a unique classic of Japanese fantasy cinema. A newly restored version premiered in Cannes last year.
