The international view of Syria seems obscured by the everyday war reports of the last few years. Too many interests now play a role in this conflict. Since Turkey entered the country in violation of international law at the beginning of October, majority inhabited by Kurds, areas of northern Syria have been invaded, the humanitarian situation in the entire region has once again deteriorated dramatically. Shortly afterwards, the war also hit the German headlines.
They receive little media attention, lasting for seven years, Efforts to build a grassroots democracy, ecological and gender-equitable democracy in the north and east of Syria. A core of this democratic awakening is the recognition of the right to self-representation of all population groups - Assyrians, Kurdish, Arabs, Yazidi women and many more. The Turkish invasion threatens to destroy this project.
At the event we would like to shed light on the background and character of this threatened democratic awakening in “Rojava” – the Kurdish name for the region. We'll investigate the question, how the local people deal with the presence of war, discuss what political future northeastern Syria now faces and what all of this has to do with us in Germany.
Speakers: Can Bali is a member of the Kurdish Association in Kassel. Anne Hoffmann represented the region last year 5 Visited for months.
