The corona pandemic is developing into a global economic crisis. The euro crisis threatens to repeat itself in the EU, because the eurozone is still more fragile than in 2008 and later. The crisis has not yet been overcome in southern Europe, institutional reform of the architecture of the monetary union has been blocked in recent years. With Italy, that country is now in focus, in which, before the corona pandemic, the contradictions of unequal development in Europe had accumulated and condensed.
Against this background, Felix Syrovatka discusses dangers and opportunities, that could be faced by progressive actors in the face of a new euro crisis. In her lecture, Angela Wigger examines the redistribution of taxpayers' money in the wake of the corona crisis and its social consequences. Emergency state aid already accounts for a good ten percent of the gross national product in the EU. It compares the current measures with the austerity policy crisis management of the EU in 2008ff. and discusses scope for protest and alternatives.
