The Corona crisis has exposed the conditions in the healthcare system to the general public: Privatizations, Savings, Staff shortages and poor pay are everyday occurrences for social workers- and healthcare. Our health care has been on the verge of collapse in recent months. The pandemic means an exceptional situation, which would pose a challenge even for well-functioning health systems. However, the virus only exacerbated the crisis in the health system and showed it more clearly, while the cause is deeper: a system that is based on competition and profit orientation and makes the health of the patient a commodity – to the dismay of employees and patients. When, if not now, must the course be set for functioning health care?
We want to move away from hospitals' orientation towards maximizing profits towards a system, that all patients - whether young or old, whether chronically ill or suffering from rare and complicated ailments - equally full and well cared for, with good working conditions for all employees. It is time to get active, to show our solidarity and fight together: for a healthy health system!
We therefore ask:
• the hiring of sufficient personnel according to need, determined by the employees themselves
• radical reduction in working hours with full staff- and wage compensation
• Immediate withdrawal of changes to the Working Hours Act – Away with the 12h day and the 60h week
• Significantly better and collectively regulated payment for everyone
• Immediate abolition of flat rates per case (DRGs)
• the stop of all privatizations
• the privatization of the privatized hospitals under the control of the employees and patients
• A nationwide coordinated struggle and a political campaign for these demands by the ver.di union
