“Social research in times of social distancing: The Corona Crisis and Its Consequences ”

With inputs from Maurice Stierl (University of Warwick) and Sonja Buckel (University of Kassel). Moderation: Benjamin Opratko (University of Vienna)

Many refugees at Europe's external borders are particularly vulnerable to the Corona virus. The aim of the event is, against this background to investigate the question, whether and how the epidemic affects migratory movements in the Mediterranean. The event gives an insight into the current situation on the Mediterranean Sea and shows critical theoretical perspectives, which enable the events to be classified.
Maurice Stierl, which is active on the Alarm Phone, among other things, gives a brief overview of the migration movements in the Aegean Sea over the past few months, in the western Mediterranean and the central Mediterranean. The focus of his contribution is on the situation in the central Mediterranean and the border protection measures there: of airspace surveillance, Activities of the Libyan Coast Guard as well as practices of “refoulement” and “push-back by proxy”, ignore the fundamental principles of the rule of law and the human rights of refugees. The article also shows current political struggles over these practices, for example the activities of the Alarm Phone or the “Free Elhiblu3”-Kampagne. Sonja Buckel then theoretically explores the connection between borders in her input, imperial way of life, Biopolitics and racism.
