LECTURE & DISCUSSION
Media in war? A media-critical analysis with Pablo Flock (Information Center for Militarization e.V.)
Are sanctions against Russia legitimate and helpful in ending the war in Ukraine, or do they do more harm to Europe? Should Ukraine receive heavy weapons or does this threaten to escalate the conflict? Can Ukraine win against its overwhelming opponent?? Such questions were discussed controversially in families and at work.
Opinions in Germany about the Ukraine war were both diverse and polarized. But “the media” reported one-sidedly in favor of arms deliveries, against diplomatic negotiations and suspected dissenters, Playing into Putin's hands – At least that's the theory, that of the social psychologist Harald Welzer and the television philosopher Richard-David Precht with their book “The Fourth Estate. How majority opinion is made, even if she isn't one” placed in public discourse. To what extent their theses are correct, should only be based on two studies on Ukraine reporting (people-)media and then discussed. Possible factors include phenomena such as fact checks, publicly funded think tanks and the centralization of the media landscape.
