The Ukraine war not only concerns world politics or the newsrooms with their special programs and focal points, but also seize the boulevard- and fashion expert:inside the “quality fashion press”. When Zelensky's military shirt becomes a "symbol of Ukraine's patriotism" and "our values" are hyped up and the war becomes a war of images and symbols, Then the political scientist David Salomon rightly speaks of poor taste, in view of the people dying every day in this conflict.
David Salomon understands this phenomenon as the aestheticization of war - based on Walter Benjamin's concept of the aestheticization of politics. The gap between “staging” and “reality” ensures this, that rearmament and militarization become established in public discourse.
Images and productions play a crucial role: Imagining a “we” and “our values” moralizes and depoliticizes the discourse and blocks the way to real analysis, about causes, Consequences and ways out of this war. But who wants to go against “peace, Freedom and democracy”.?
David Solomon is a political scientist at the TU Darmstadt, researches and teaches in the areas of democratic theories, newer theories of imperialism, Political aesthetics and Brecht research. In addition, David Salomon is a member of the Z editorial team. (Marxist Renewal Magazine).
