The focus of the media and political debates on the welfare state is primarily the so-called “abuse of social benefits” and questions about it, how resources can be saved and how punitive a welfare state can be. It remains unlit, that the number of people, which does not honor a valid claim, is far higher, than the abuse rate. Within this group the number of those increases, A high proportion of people knowingly forego social benefits. Their renunciation is sometimes understood as a criticism of the functioning of the welfare state and as a deficit in its legitimacy.

Dr. Jennifer Eckhardt from TU Dortmund gives an insight into her subject-oriented research on the topic of waiving social benefits. Prof. Dr. Anne van Rießen comments from the perspective of social-educational user research.
