Vermittlung or how to make art less exclusive

12.08.2022
19:00 - 21:30

Stellwerk, Kassel

The talk will take place as part of the exhibition- and talk series “seven things nobody told me about working in the arts”. In the series, working conditions and discourses of young artists are presented within seven overarching themes:negotiated and discussed internally. Particular value is placed on radical transparency in discussions and the sharing of knowledge gained from one's own work history as an aid to all guests.

Ameli M.. Klein is a curator, Activist and founder of Collective Rewilding

Ann-Kathrin Mogge is a historian and works as a political educator at Kopiloen e.V. and as an art educator at documenta fifteen

Sarah Metz is a designer and freelance artist and works as a curator and cultural space agent for the Kassel Cultural Office.

Why do you always meet the same people at openings?? Why are the same phrases and terms found in numerous art texts?, which so often do not even describe the work, but belong to a supposedly good tone? Why isn't exhibition advertising designed for this?, non-specialist visitors:to invite inside?
Why are many placement offers still based on a reproductive aspect?, designed and given a top-down perspective, interrupted by small leading questions, Know more again, than they really stimulate your own thinking? Becomes art for other artists:made inside? As a result, some exhibitions and works of art remain in perpetuity, affirmative exchange between artists:in, Curator:in and specialist audience?
If more people were interested in art and cultural offerings, if the speech were different?
Or is the threshold to tokenism, the merely symbolic inclusion, reached faster, than you think, because there is often more thought for the “desired audience”., than with him? And let's actually only try to reach the audience that hasn't been reached, to make ourselves feel better? Let's decide for others, what you want, decide with them, or let them decide for themselves and accept the result?
Many art scholars have been questioning this for a long time:within, Art educator:within, Artist:inside and exhibition organizers:The question of the communication and accessibility of art is very self-critical and they want their work to be unifying, use cross-border elements for social exchange, contribute to cultural participation and cultural education.
Can the art canon itself be directed and determined through new types of art education?? And can we thereby free the art world from its elitist attitude and transform it?
And can it work?, while curator:still receive a higher salary than artists:within?
