Common land – farming together

What the commons can teach us about alternative economies.

Lecture by Johanna Schreiner

The commons, an area used jointly by the village population, was a central component for many centuries, the basis for securing survival (Subsistence). Through wars, Pest, It was lost when the leases were terminated and lands were finally acquired. But not without resistance - women in particular resisted. They protested, in which they hedge, which served as property boundaries, torn again. But with the mass migration of the rural population to the cities and the beginning of industrialization, it seems to have become a principle, that will be forgotten forever. Silvia Federici deals with the commons [lat. communis common(sam)] working together in a needs-oriented manner. Through the re-appropriation of places, in which collaborative work occurs, she sees an opportunity to resist social hierarchies. How can we create spaces, in which we make changes in the here and now, despite ever-accelerating neoliberalism and increasing inequalities? Where and how these changes take place? Can the idea of the commons help us find each other again in a society, which is becoming more and more divided?
