In a critical discussion, the lecture deals with German politics of remembrance - not with its official self-attributions, but with their empty spaces. He refers to the political handling of right-wing violence in Germany and offers a broad empirical overview. Starting from the thesis, that history is always political, he illuminates, how remembering works as a state-supporting instrument and what role forgetting plays as an institutionalized practice. The focus is on the question, how continuities of German historical thought beyond the narrative of the “memory world champion” are racist, Systematically hide and depoliticize anti-Semitic and right-wing violence.
