AfD association with a decline in membership
The chairman of the AfD district association Werra-Meißner, Thomas Schmid, resigned after less than three months. He left the party together with his wife Christina Schmid. The top candidate in the local elections had already resigned in April, and an elected representative had to leave the parliamentary group after publications about his neo-Nazi past.
In addition to the prominent resignations, the internal conflicts in the district association have led to a wave of resignations in recent months. According to information from the HNA, since the local elections in the spring 2026 fast 25 Percent of members leave the district association. Of the original eight members of the district council, only five are still in office.
The AfD in the Werra-Meißner-Land had already been practically inactive at the district level for years. Contrary to the nationwide trend, the party is not succeeding, in part due to disputes and headwinds, to anchor yourself locally.
