Yesterday, the Senate of the University of Kassel approved a draft amendment to the civil clause. This was 2013 decided as a voluntary commitment, according to which research and teaching should exclusively serve civilian goals. The new draft is intended to overcome the dividing line between civil and military purposes. He only commits himself abstractly “maintaining peace” and “the avoidance of war”.
The AStA sees the change “very critical” and fears loopholes. He is therefore “still against any weakening of the civil clause”. Was criticized, that the Senate had already made up its mind, before there was a public discussion. Last year, the Presidium emphasized not to question the civil clause.
Am 01. The change is now expected to be approved in July. Most recently, federal- and state governments put increased pressure on universities, to reconsider their civil clauses and discuss a ban.
