Allegations of sexual violence in a children's home – Lauterbad Institute closes residential group in Habichtswald

The Lauterbad Institute is closing its residential group for children with disabilities in September. The reason for this is, among other things, deficiencies in the handling of cases of suspected sexual violence.

According to information from “hr”, a resident is said to have been subjected to sexual assault by an employee over a period of two years. The case is the third known suspected attack in the residential group. Legally, the case remained largely without consequences. The ex-employee has so far only received a fine.

Sexualized violence is not only a social problem in the home context. Vulnerable groups of people such as people with disabilities and children are particularly affected. In a nationwide study in the year 2025 gave 12,7 % of those surveyed said they had been affected by sexual violence as children and young people. The majority of perpetrators are men.
