Kassel-Calden Airport is to be used increasingly for military purposes in the future. Managing director Lars Ernst says he is in talks with NATO about this.
The airport is already being increasingly used by the Bundeswehr. According to a resolution by the supervisory board, defense will form one of the airport's three pillars in the future, along with drones and e-flying.
Militarization is an attempt to respond to empty runways and costs in the millions. The airport was for 250 million euros built and has since its opening 2013 struggling with underutilization.
Last winter, no civilian aircraft took off. The last interested airline had postponed its launch plans three times. Meanwhile it turned out, that the airline only exists on paper. The public prosecutor's office is investigating the owner, Václav Fischer.
Calden Airport costs the state and local authorities at least every day 14.000 €.
